Menthol Cigarettes & Mingo

Lloyd "Spud" Hughes, born in Mingo Junction, invented menthol cigarettes. He patented his menthol process and began selling Spud cigarettes in Wheeling, West Virginia and throughout the valley. In May of 1926 he sold the patent for $90,000 and began to spend lavishly. Spud cigarettes were one of the top selling cigarettes in the 1930s
